Senior Learning Centers in the USA
What are senior learning centers? Seniors learn every single day just like the rest of us. Sometimes life gets in the way and they never accomplished things they wanted to learn. Senior learning centers will help do this.
Run by volunteers, seniors can earn their GED, learn the basics of computers and learning how to go online and surf along with all the safety they should know about. A person technically does not have to be a senior, some ages start at fifty to be able to use one of these centers.
What a Senior Learning Center Can Provide
In California there is eight senior learning centers run by a wonderful company called Senior Net. The training is all hands on and taught step by step. There can be a class to learn word processing, one for learning to email and categorize it, or one to use video chat to talk to family and dear friends that live far away.
Some senior learning centers will teach things that a person has wanted to learn or improve on. This is where the volunteers help out so much. They could be a computer technician, a painter, a chef, a dancer, or whatever the profession is.
If a senior has no transportation, the senior learning centers has vans to pick the seniors up on the days of their classes. Often time’s lunch will be provided. Sometimes materials will be provided for the classes provided by donations from companies. Or the senior themselves may pay a fee for the class if there is one.
These senior learning centers breathe life back into the seniors that live alone and absolutely have no one to talk to. They have always been active and want to stay that way. This helps with depression and keeping their mentality vibrant and strong.
